This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to cut, shape and apply finishing techniques to annealed coloured and textured glass of manufactured thickness.

Determine job requirements

1.1

Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)

Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times

Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs

Identify job requirements, including materials, types of cuts, shapes and edges, processes and quantities required, from specifications, drawings, designs, job sheets or work instructions

Plan and prepare for work

2.1

Select and check tools, equipment and thin glass materials prior to use to ensure they are appropriate for the work and are in a safe and serviceable condition

2.2

Determine cutting list and identify quality standards and procedures in accordance with workplace requirements and industry standards

2.3

Select glass to be cut and processed to industry standard tolerances using information from the work order, including type of glass, thickness, colour, texture and dimensions

2.4

Identify and prepare equipment and settings required to perform the work

2.5

Plan the work sequence in a logical order to suit the job

2.6

Select suitable cutting, shaping and lubrication methods

2.7

Select glass processing table and clear surface and work area of debris, dust , obstructions and potential hazards with cullet bins located close to work area

Check glass for imperfections and damage prior to handling

Locate glass to be processed in the work area using correct manual handling techniques and procedures

Process glass

3.1

Measure glass within specified tolerances so as to minimise waste according to enterprise standards

3.2

Operate and monitor tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures to ensure correct quality and output

3.3

Process glass to required standard in accordance with job order, work instructions and procedures, including the performance of routine lubrication and adjustments of tools/equipment

3.4

Identify and report problems occurred during work operations to appropriate personnel in accordance with workplace procedures

3.5

Follow authorised changes in working procedures and/or requirements

3.6

Inspect completed product for quality of work and items found defective are repaired, reprocessed or discarded in accordance with workplace procedures

Complete work

4.1

Label and store processed glass ensuring there are no projections in accordance with procedures

4.2

Remove scraps and off-cuts for disposal and/or recycling as required

4.3

Remove and store tools, equipment and unused materials in accordance with SOPs

Clean work area and dispose of rubbish as appropriate

Complete workplace documentation in accordance with SOPs

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include:

following work instructions, SOPs and safe work practices

identifying and interpreting specifications, drawings, standards and other relevant information to process coloured and textured glass by hand

applying safe handling requirements for equipment, products and materials, including the use of PPE

identifying and selecting materials to be used in the work process

using mathematical ideas and techniques to complete measurements, including calculating area and estimating material requirements

using tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner

completing straight cuts by hand and cutting simple shapes, truncated and radius corners and circles in annealed coloured and textured glass

calculating the cost of jobs

disposing of scrap and off-cuts in accordance with environmental guidelines and workplace procedures

communicating and working effectively and safely with others.

Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

safe work practices and procedures and use of PPE

qualities and characteristics of coloured and textured glass, including hazards and handling requirements

correct identification and use of glass cutting equipment, their functions and procedures for use

set-up and operation of glass cutting equipment, including procedures for reporting product defects or equipment faults

work flow requirements related to glass cutting

environmental protection requirements relating to the disposal of waste material

established communication channels and protocols.

Assessors must:

satisfy the assessor competency requirements that are in place at the time of the assessment as set by the VET regulator

have vocational competency in processing coloured and textured glass by hand at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience

Where possible assessment must occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic operational workplace conditions that cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.

Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

annealed coloured and textured glass suitable for architectural and stained glass

furniture applications and mirrors

speciality glasses, including flash coloured glass and antique glass

Tools and equipment include:

flat felt covered cutting tables

tungsten wheel glass cutters

circle cutters

L-squares and straight edges

tape measures

marking pens and chinagraph pencils

templates and lubricants

tables appropriate for cutting glass

Thin glass includes:

annealed coloured and textured glass of manufactured thickness

Glass processing by hand includes:

cutting

shaping

PPE includes one (1) or more of the following:
